Retired Policeman Threatens to Join Boko Haram Over Unpaid Pension

A retired Nigerian police officer has stirred public concern after threatening to join the terrorist group Boko Haram over unresolved pension issues, drawing attention to the growing frustration among former security personnel.

In a widely circulated statement, the ex-officer expressed deep anger over his welfare, warning that he could take drastic action if nothing is done to address his situation.

“If nothing is done about this, I’ll go to the other side and join Boko Haram. I will help them fix their guns and train them,” he said.

His remarks reflect a wider sense of neglect felt by many retired officers, who have long complained about delayed payments, poor benefits and difficult living conditions after years of service to the country. The former policeman described his pension experience as “slavery”, underscoring the depth of his frustration and sense of abandonment.

The statement has sparked unease among the public, particularly given the potential security risks posed by someone with professional training making such threats.

The issue of police pensions has remained a source of tension in recent years. In September 2025, retired officers staged a protest at the National Assembly in Abuja, rejecting the Contributory Pension Scheme, which they described as unfair and inadequate. Many argued that the system leaves them struggling financially after decades of service.

In response to the outcry, lawmakers passed the Nigeria Police Force Pension Board Bill, aimed at removing the police from the scheme. Senate President Godswill Akpabio later assured protesting retirees that the matter would be treated with urgency.

However, as of now, the bill is yet to receive presidential assent and has not become law.

For many retired officers, the delay continues to fuel uncertainty and hardship and for some, like the former policeman, it has led to anger that is now spilling into the public space.
