Gunmen ambushed the convoy of Mouktar Lugga, Chief of Staff to the Zamfara State Governor, on Thursday evening along the Funtua–Gusau highway, in what has raised fresh concerns over security on the route.

The attack reportedly occurred at about 6:16 p.m. near Kucheri village as Lugga was returning to Gusau after an official engagement. According to security sources cited by counter-insurgency publication Zagazola Makama, the assailants emerged suddenly from both sides of the road and opened fire on the vehicle carrying the senior government official.

In the chaos, a bullet shattered the windscreen of the vehicle, narrowly missing the driver. One of the attackers was also said to have attempted to fire at close range, but his weapon failed to discharge — a moment that may have proved decisive.

Despite the intensity of the ambush, the driver remained composed and managed to navigate the vehicle out of danger. Lugga and the other occupants escaped without injury.

For many travellers who use the Funtua–Gusau road, the incident is a stark reminder of the risks they face daily. While this attack ended without loss of life, it underscores the persistent insecurity in the region and the narrow margins that often separate survival from tragedy.
