A prominent Nigerian entrepreneur and respected community leader, Chief Yusuf Amuda Lawal Obelawo, has passed away at the age of 94, marking the end of an era for business and community leadership in Osun State. The renowned businessman reportedly died on Thursday, March 12, 2026, prompting tributes from political leaders, traditional institutions, and residents across the state.
Chief Obelawo, who hailed from Ejigbo in Osun State, was widely regarded as one of the influential entrepreneurs of his generation in south-western Nigeria and West Africa. Born on May 20, 1930, he rose from humble beginnings after leaving school early due to family challenges and later travelled to Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, in search of better economic opportunities.
Through perseverance and hard work, he built a successful business empire spanning construction, manufacturing, wood processing, and plastics production. Notably, he established Lawal Obelawo Plastic Industry Nigeria in Osogbo, considered one of the earliest privately owned plastic manufacturing companies in the country.
Beyond business, the late Obelawo held the traditional title of Babalaje of Ejigboland and was known for extensive philanthropy and community development efforts. Local government authorities in Ejigbo described his passing as a “colossal loss” to the community, praising his legacy of generosity, leadership, and economic contribution.
His life story (from early hardship to international business success) remains a symbol of resilience and entrepreneurship in Nigeria.
