Yoruba nation agitator and activist, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, has revealed that president Bola Tinubu has reportedly approved the establishment of a new security outfit, “Iru Ekun,” founded by him, aimed at addressing security challenges in the South-West region.
The announcement was made in a statement shared on his official Facebook page on Monday, where he disclosed that the security network had been registered and granted approval to operate.
According to the statement, the newly established outfit is expected to focus on tackling criminal activities and strengthening security across communities within the South-West.
“A security network known as IRU EKUN has been registered and approved,” the statement read.
However, further operational details, including the structure of the organisation, jurisdiction, leadership framework, and specific mandate of the outfit, were not immediately disclosed.
The development has since generated reactions across political and social circles, amid ongoing concerns over insecurity in parts of the country.
Sunday Igboho gained national prominence during campaigns against insecurity, kidnappings, and attacks linked to armed groups in some South-West communities. His activities drew nationwide attention in 2021 following a security operation at his Ibadan residence and subsequent legal controversies involving authorities in the Benin Republic.
The latest move is being viewed by observers as another step in ongoing efforts toward regional security advocacy and community-based responses to security concerns.
As of the time of filing this report, there was no official confirmation from the Presidency, the Nigeria Police Force, or other federal security agencies regarding the approval status or operational framework of the security outfit.
Stakeholders say further clarification from relevant authorities may determine the precise role the security network will play within Nigeria’s broader security structure.
