The head of the Roman Catholic Church, Pope Leo XIV, has reaffirmed that he will not be silenced following a public attack from U.S. President Donald Trump over his stance on the ongoing Iran war. The Pope insisted that his mission remains rooted in promoting peace and condemning violence, regardless of political pressure.
On April 13, 2026, Pope Leo told reporters while travelling to Algeria that he is “not afraid” of the Trump administration and will continue speaking out against war, describing it as a moral obligation of the Church.
He emphasized that his role is not political but spiritual, and that his message is grounded in the Gospel and the protection of human life.
The remarks came shortly after Trump labelled the Pope “weak on crime” and “terrible for foreign policy” in a Truth Social post, escalating tensions between Washington and the Vatican.
The dispute follows weeks of criticism from Pope Leo over the Iran conflict, which he has repeatedly described as unjust and devastating for civilians.
Despite the confrontation, the Pope maintained that he will continue advocating for dialogue, diplomacy, and an end to hostilities, warning that global leaders must prioritize peace over escalation.
The exchange highlights a rare and intensifying clash between political authority and religious leadership over the moral framing of modern warfare.
