By Paul Joseph

The Ekiti State Police Command has dismissed reports that human rights activist and African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, was kidnapped in Ado-Ekiti, saying he was rescued following an altercation at a restaurant.

The clarification followed a post on Sowore’s X account on Friday afternoon alleging that armed men had abducted him from a restaurant in the Ekiti State capital, leaving his whereabouts unknown.

However, the police said the incident involved an altercation between Sowore and some individuals at a restaurant in the Dalimore area of Ado-Ekiti.

In a statement issued on Friday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Sunday Abutu, said officers were alerted to the incident and quickly mobilised to the scene, where they rescued the activist.

According to the Command, Sowore sustained a minor injury during the incident and was receiving medical attention at the Police Hospital in Ado-Ekiti.

The police added that the Commissioner of Police, CP Michael Falade, had ordered a discreet investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the confrontation and identify those involved.

The Command said anyone found culpable would be brought to justice in accordance with the law.

It urged residents to remain calm and disregard reports suggesting that Sowore had been kidnapped, warning against the circulation of unverified information capable of creating unnecessary panic and tension.

The police also reaffirmed their commitment to protecting lives and property across Ekiti State, irrespective of political affiliation, social status or background.

The Command’s statement provides a different account of the incident from the initial claim of abduction circulated on social media, while investigations are expected to establish what transpired at the restaurant.
