A fresh wave of insecurity has hit the Federal University of Lafia (UniLafia) after gunmen abducted three students from an off-campus residence, prompting an intensive police search operation that led to the rescue of one of the victims.
The Nasarawa State Police Command said tactical and intelligence teams have been deployed to track down the kidnappers and secure the release of the two students still in captivity.
Police spokesperson, SP Ramhan Nansel, said the abduction occurred on Tuesday night after the university’s Chief Security Officer alerted the command that armed men had invaded Living Seed Lodge, located on the outskirts of the students’ residential area, and whisked away three undergraduates.
Acting on the report, Commissioner of Police Shetima Jauro Mohammed ordered the immediate deployment of tactical operatives, patrol teams and other security personnel, who launched a coordinated search-and-rescue operation in the surrounding forest.
The operation led to the successful rescue of one of the abducted students, while efforts have been intensified to locate the remaining victims and arrest those responsible for the attack.
The police commissioner directed all operational and intelligence units of the command to sustain the operation until the remaining students are rescued safely, assuring residents that the perpetrators would be brought to justice.
The command also appealed to members of the public to remain vigilant and provide credible information that could assist security agencies in the ongoing operation.
The latest incident has renewed concerns over the safety of students residing in off-campus hostels, particularly those located in isolated areas around tertiary institutions.
