The Lagos State Police Command has arrested 135 suspected cultists and recovered 26 firearms during coordinated raids on criminal hideouts across the state as part of efforts to prevent cult-related violence associated with the annual July 7 (7/7) celebrations.
The operation, carried out on the directive of the Commissioner of Police, Tijani Fatai, targeted suspected cult groups believed to be planning attacks and initiation activities based on credible intelligence.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the command’s spokesperson, Superintendent of Police Abimbola Adebisi, said the raids were conducted simultaneously by Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers (DPOs), Tactical Commanders and the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU).
According to Adebisi, intelligence reports indicated that rival cult groups were preparing for violent activities linked to the annual 7/7 cult celebration, prompting the police to launch the operation.
In addition to the 26 firearms, officers recovered 16 other dangerous weapons, including cutlasses, battle axes, daggers and knives.
The police also seized cult insignia, assorted charms, 11 bottles of alcoholic drinks, substances suspected to be Indian hemp and other illicit drugs, as well as six mobile phones believed to be connected to the suspects.
Adebisi said investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend other members of the criminal gangs involved in cult-related activities across the state.
She added that the 135 suspects will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
The Lagos State Police Command reiterated its commitment to sustaining intelligence-led operations to combat cultism and other violent crimes, while urging residents to continue providing timely information to security agencies.
