The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed that its tactical operatives repelled an attack on the convoy of the All Progressives Congress governorship candidate in Borno State, Mustapha Gubio.
The incident occurred on Thursday along the Kareto-Damasak Road, according to a statement issued by the police on Friday.
The attackers reportedly engaged the convoy with improvised explosive devices and rocket-propelled grenades, prompting an immediate response from the tactical team providing security.
“The tactical team forced the terrorists to retreat into the surrounding bush and subsequently scanned and cleared the immediate axis to neutralise secondary explosive threats,” the statement reads.
“The convoy, conveying a gubernatorial aspirant, government officials and political stakeholders, was safely evacuated to a secure location with no casualties recorded among members of the entourage.”
Police said the operatives counter-engaged the terrorists and forced them to retreat into the surrounding bush.
Following the confrontation, the security team searched and cleared the affected stretch of road to identify and neutralise any possible secondary explosive threats.
The convoy, which included Gubio, government officials and other political stakeholders, was subsequently evacuated to a secure location.
The police said no member of the entourage was injured or killed in the attack.
The incident underscores the continuing security challenges facing parts of Borno State, where terrorist groups have repeatedly targeted roads, communities and high-profile movements.
Borno has previously witnessed attacks involving senior political figures. In 2020, suspected Islamic State West Africa Province militants reportedly ambushed the convoy of Governor Babagana Zulum while he was returning to Maiduguri from Baga.
