The Delta State Police Command has confirmed that a train on the Warri-Itakpe route derailed, with no casualties reported.
SP Bright Edafe, the command’s spokesperson, disclosed this information during a phone interview with journalists in Warri on Friday.
“It is true, no death, no casualty was recorded in the incident,” Edafe stated.
A passenger, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the incident occurred on Thursday at Abraka, in the Ethiope East Local Government Area of Delta State.
Another passenger reported that the train was traveling from Itakpe in Kogi State to Ujevwu in Delta State when one of the coaches derailed near the Abraka train station.
“The incident occurred at about 7:15 pm, a few meters from the Abraka train station. I could not proceed with my journey. Some passengers jumped out through the doors while the train was slowing down, dragging the remaining coaches along with the derailed one. Some passengers sustained minor injuries from the resulting stampede,” the passenger recounted.
The distance between the Abraka train station and the Ujevwu Terminal station is approximately 20 minutes by rail.
