Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force in Rivers State have foiled a kidnap attempt in Port Harcourt, arresting a suspected gang member and recovering two AK-47 rifles, magazines, and live ammunition.
The development was disclosed in a statement by Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Grace Iringe-Koko, who said the operation was triggered by a distress call received in the early hours of March 20 from a resident, Fadi Nasser. The victim had reported that armed men stormed his residence on Orogbum Crescent, Woji Road, in the Government Reserved Area (GRA), attempting to abduct him.
According to the police, the attackers opened fire during the operation, but the victim managed to escape, prompting a rapid response from security operatives.
Breakthrough in the investigation came after a mobile phone suspected to belong to one of the attackers was recovered at the scene. Using technical intelligence, operatives of the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) unit tracked the device, leading to the arrest of one Joseph Abibo, believed to be a member of the gang.
Police said the suspect later provided information that led operatives to the group’s hideout. However, on arrival, officers were met with heavy gunfire, resulting in a gun duel.
The operatives eventually overpowered the gang, but several suspects fled the scene. Authorities disclosed that about six members of the group escaped with gunshot wounds into a nearby river.
A subsequent search of the hideout led to the recovery of two AK-47 rifles, four magazines, and 108 rounds of live ammunition, suspected to have been used in previous criminal operations.
The police said efforts are ongoing to track down the fleeing suspects and recover more weapons, while urging residents to remain vigilant and support security agencies with timely and credible information.
The Rivers State Police Command reiterated its commitment to safeguarding lives and property, assuring the public that investigations into the case are ongoing.
