The Nigeria Police Force in Plateau State has arrested a suspected fake soldier and five other individuals in connection with unrest that gripped parts of Jos on Wednesday.
Police spokesperson, Alfred Alabo, confirmed the arrests, revealing that the impersonator was apprehended at Angwan Rukuba the same community recently hit by a deadly Palm Sunday attack that left dozens dead and several others injured.
According to him, the suspect, who was dressed in military-style clothing, was acting suspiciously when he was intercepted by security operatives. A fake identity card of the Nigerian Military School was reportedly recovered from him.
Alabo further disclosed that five additional suspects were arrested across the Jos metropolis for taking advantage of the tense situation to commit crimes.
“They are essentially thieves who exploited the unrest to snatch bags and money from unsuspecting residents, particularly around the Terminus area,” he said.
Security forces were swiftly deployed to contain the situation, disperse the hoodlums, and restore calm across affected areas.
Authorities have since intensified security presence around key locations, including university areas and other strategic points, to safeguard lives and property.
Residents have been urged to remain calm but vigilant, and to report any suspicious movements to security agencies as efforts continue to stabilise the area and prevent further breakdown of law and order.
