Operatives of the Ondo State Police Command have arrested a 33-year-old woman, Adejoke Ayomide, for allegedly defrauding more than 90 people of over ₦42 million under the guise of securing European visas.
The suspect, who resides on Adesoye Street in Abeokuta, Ogun State, was arrested following a petition filed by the law firm of Akindayomi Oluwa Tobi & Associates.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, Ayomide allegedly received a total of ₦42,326,000 through her Opay account after promising to facilitate visas to Spain, Portugal and France for over 93 intending travellers.
Police said the suspect became unreachable after collecting the money, prompting complaints from the victims. She was subsequently tracked down and arrested on Wednesday.
Jimoh said preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect presented herself as a travel consultant capable of processing European visas and obtained the funds from unsuspecting victims for the purported travel arrangements.
He added that the suspect is currently in police custody, where she has made useful confessional statements, while investigators are working to identify possible accomplices and determine whether more victims were affected.
The police said Ayomide will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
