“The Anambra State Police Command in the early hours of January 14, 2026, recorded another major operational breakthrough in its sustained efforts to rid the state of criminal elements and ensure the safety of lives and property.”
“The police operatives attached to the Rapid Response Squad, Awkuzu, acting on credible and actionable intelligence, laid an ambush for a five-man group of armed hoodlums suspected to be armed robbers, cultists, and linked to a proscribed secessionist group at Enugwu Agidi Junction, Dunukofia Local Government Area of Anambra State.”
The Anambra State Police Command has arrested two suspected armed robbers following a two-hour gun battle at Enugwu-Agidi Junction in Dunukofia Local Government Area of the state. The suspects were reportedly part of a five-man gang linked to a proscribed secessionist group.
Police sources said the confrontation occurred in the early hours of Wednesday when operatives engaged the gang, leading to fatal gunshot injuries on two of the suspects, while three others escaped with gunshot wounds.
During the operation, security operatives recovered one T.06 rifle, two pump-action guns, 24 rounds of T.06 ammunition, 15 live cartridges, assorted criminal charms, a cult red beret and a black Toyota Highlander vehicle believed to have been used by the gang.
Investigations also revealed that one of the suspects, before dying, admitted that members of the gang were involved in a previous attack on the convoy of a former Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige, as well as an attempted reprisal attack by a cult group.
The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, Ikioye Orutugu, commended the operatives for their bravery and urged them to intensify efforts to track down the fleeing suspects. He also directed hospitals and medical facilities to report any individuals presenting gunshot injuries to the nearest police station as investigations continue.
The police said further updates would be made available as the investigation progresses.
