Yoruba nation activist Sunday Adeyemo, widely known as Sunday Igboho, officially inaugurated the Ogun State chapter of the Iru Ekun Security Network on Wednesday. The launch event drew a large crowd of thousands of volunteers.
Addressing the gathering, Igboho outlined the structure of the security outfit, emphasizing the necessity of strict discipline among members. He cautioned volunteers against reckless behavior, noting that possession of an identification card does not grant them license to act improperly.
Igboho explained that the security initiative will operate in coordination with the government. According to the activist, the Federal Government will oversee the training of volunteers, while the Ogun State Governor’s Office will determine member deployment and provide monthly allowances to support their families.
He expressed optimism about the initiative’s potential, drawing a comparison to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps. He noted that, like the NSCDC, the Iru Ekun—which translates to “leopard’s tail”—aims to grow into a recognized force that helps maintain order.
The broader objective of the project is to secure official identification for members across the South-West region, enabling them to operate legitimately while assisting in efforts to combat kidnapping, banditry, and other criminal activities. This inauguration follows similar launches in other states across the region.
