By George Omagbemi

Former Barcelona, Chelsea and Spain winger Pedro Rodriguez has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 39, bringing an accomplished career spanning about two decades to an end.

Pedro announced his decision on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, in an emotional video recorded at the Camp Nou in Barcelona and shared on social media. He said he felt the time had come to begin “a new chapter” in his life, adding that he was proud to have lived his football dream.

The announcement came about four months after Pedro’s contract with Lazio expired on June 30, 2026. He subsequently became a free agent and remained without a club during the summer transfer window. Reports had indicated that retirement was among the possibilities being considered for the veteran forward.

Pedro, born in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, joined Barcelona’s youth system in 2004 and made his first-team debut in 2008. He went on to become an important member of Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona, winning three Champions League titles and five La Liga titles among numerous other trophies.

He left Barcelona for Chelsea in 2015, where he won the Premier League, FA Cup and Europa League. He later played for AS Roma before joining Lazio in 2021, where he spent the final five seasons of his career.

At international level, Pedro was part of Spain’s historic generation that won the 2010 FIFA World Cup and Euro 2012. He started the 2010 World Cup final against the Netherlands.

According to Reuters, Pedro finished with 794 club appearances and 197 goals, while making 65 appearances and scoring 17 goals for Spain.

His retirement marks the end of the playing career of one of the few remaining active members of Spain’s 2010 World Cup-winning generation.
