Leaders of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) are intensifying calls for unity and reconciliation within the party as internal disputes threaten cohesion ahead of the 2027 general elections. However, FCT Minister and senior PDP figure, Nyesom Wike, has publicly rejected the party’s plan to install a new caretaker committee, insisting instead on holding a national convention to democratically elect new leadership.
The disagreement, reported on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, underscores significant factional tension within the PDP, Nigeria’s main opposition party. Some party stakeholders have advocated for a caretaker committee to manage the party’s affairs and prepare for upcoming elections, but Wike and his supporters argue that only a convention with elected officers can restore internal legitimacy and strengthen the party’s prospects.
Wike, a former governor of Rivers State and influential national figure, has consistently pushed for reforms and inclusive leadership arrangements, positioning himself as a unifying voice amid competing interests within the PDP. His rejection of the caretaker committee reflects broader disagreements over party governance, candidate selection processes, and strategic direction.
Party elders and reconciliation committees are reportedly engaged in intensive consultations to avert a deeper split, as many members fear that unresolved conflicts could weaken the PDP’s ability to mount a strong challenge to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Observers say the outcome of this internal struggle will be crucial in shaping the opposition’s competitiveness and organisational strength ahead of nationwide contests in 2027.
