A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party aligned with Nyesom Wike has affirmed Chief Maurice Vunobolki as its governorship candidate for the 2027 election in Adamawa State.
The affirmation took place on Sunday during a party exercise held at the Mahmud Ribadu Square in Yola, where delegates from the 21 local government areas of the state reportedly endorsed Vunobolki through a voice vote.
The development comes amid the lingering internal crisis rocking the PDP at both the national and state levels, with rival factions continuing to battle for control of party structures ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Vunobolki’s emergence followed the absence of another aspirant, Caleb Andrew Myebangara, who was said to belong to a separate faction of the PDP that has yet to secure recognition from the Independent National Electoral Commission.
The motion for the affirmation of Vunobolki was moved by former House of Representatives member Ja’afaru Ribadu and seconded by the Chairman of Yola North Local Government Area, Ibrahim Jimeta.
Following the adoption by delegates, Chairman of the PDP Governorship Primary Committee for Adamawa State, Debo Ologunagba, officially declared Maurice Vunobolki as the duly affirmed governorship candidate of the faction for the 2027 election.
Speaking after the exercise, Vunobolki called for unity among party members across Adamawa State, urging supporters to work together toward securing victory in the forthcoming governorship election.
He said his background in development consulting had exposed him to the challenges facing communities across the state, expressing confidence that he possesses the experience and capacity to deliver practical governance solutions if elected.
The governorship hopeful also challenged aspirants from other political parties to public debates, insisting that candidates seeking leadership positions should present clear policy directions and demonstrate their understanding of the state’s pressing needs.
Political observers say the latest development could further deepen divisions within the PDP in Adamawa State as competing factions continue to struggle for legitimacy and influence ahead of 2027.
The unfolding situation is expected to shape political alignments in the state in the coming months, especially as parties intensify preparations for what is anticipated to be a fiercely contested governorship race.
