Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar on Monday participated in the presidential primary election of the African Democratic Congress ahead of the 2027 general elections, describing the exercise as a critical step toward rebuilding Nigeria.
The nationwide primary was conducted simultaneously across 8,809 wards in the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory using the direct primary system after reported attempts to produce a consensus candidate failed.
Atiku cast his vote at the Ajiya Ward Polling Unit in Jimeta, Yola, alongside party supporters and officials.
Speaking shortly after voting, the former vice president described the process as democracy in action, expressing confidence that the exercise would strengthen efforts to reposition the country.
“This is democracy at work. The election taking place simultaneously in 8,809 wards in Nigeria is a major step in our quest to recover our beloved country and set it on the path of prosperity,” Atiku stated.
Also participating in the exercise was former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi, who cast his vote in Ubima, Rivers State.
Amaechi urged Nigerians to prioritise competence and leadership capacity ahead of the 2027 elections rather than ethnic or religious considerations.
“Vote for merit, not ethnicity or religion,” he told supporters during the primary exercise.
Another presidential aspirant, Mohammed Hayatu-Deen, voted in Borno State, where he appealed to party members to support his vision for a new direction within the ADC.
Party officials described the exercise as a significant milestone in the process of selecting the party’s presidential candidate for what is expected to be a highly competitive 2027 presidential election.
Political analysts say the participation of prominent figures such as Atiku and Amaechi has further increased public attention on the ADC as political realignments continue ahead of the next general elections.
