Oyo Court Dismisses Gani Adams’ ₦5bn Defamation Case Against Sunday Igboho

An Ibadan-based Oyo State High Court has struck out a ₦5 billion lawsuit filed by Chief Gani Adams, the Aare-Onakakanfo of Yorubaland, against Yoruba activist Chief Sunday Igboho for alleged defamation and privacy violations.

Adams accused Igboho of unlawfully recording and disseminating a private phone call, claiming it violated his privacy rights under Section 37 of the 1999 Constitution.

Justice O.T. Ademola-Salami, however, ruled the case invalid due to a flawed affidavit, which was neither sworn by Adams nor an authorized agent.

Additionally, the court found no proof that Igboho had tapped Adams’ phone.

The court ordered Adams to cover ₦500,000 in legal costs for Igboho.
