Osimhen Set to Become Galatasaray Captain After Icardi Exit

By George Omagbemi Sylvester

Nigerian international Victor Osimhen is on course to become the new captain of Turkish champions Galatasaray following the departure of Argentine forward Mauro Icardi, marking another major milestone in the striker’s remarkable rise at the Istanbul club.

Reports from Turkey indicate that Osimhen, who served as the club’s vice-captain during the 2025/26 season, has emerged as the leading candidate to inherit the captain’s armband after Icardi’s contract expired. Although Galatasaray is yet to make an official announcement, the Nigerian forward is widely regarded within the club as the natural successor.

Since joining Galatasaray from Napoli in 2025, Osimhen has established himself as one of the club’s most influential players.

He has helped the Turkish giants win back-to-back Süper Lig titles, lift the Turkish Cup, and make an impressive impact in the UEFA Champions League.

The Super Eagles striker also became the fastest player in Galatasaray’s history to reach 50 goals and the club’s first foreign player to score a Champions League hat-trick.

If confirmed, Osimhen’s appointment as captain would further underline his growing leadership role at Galatasaray and reinforce his status as one of Africa’s most accomplished footballers, as the club prepares for another domestic and European campaign.
