United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has called on countries to reject unilateral and hegemonic approaches in addressing global challenges, stressing that collective responsibility and strong multilateral systems remain essential for peace and stability.
Speaking to journalists at the UN Headquarters, Guterres said the year is already unfolding with uncertainty and disorder, warning that reckless actions across the world are producing dangerous and far-reaching consequences.
He noted that power is increasingly shifting from governments to private technology companies and cautioned that the absence of proper safeguards around emerging technologies could lead to instability rather than progress.
According to him, technologies that influence human behaviour, elections, markets and even conflicts must not operate without regulation, as unchecked control in such areas poses serious risks to global order.
Guterres emphasised that global challenges cannot be resolved by a single dominant power imposing its will, nor by competing powers dividing the world into spheres of influence. He said neither model offers lasting solutions to shared international problems.
He advocated a faster transition to a multipolar world that is inclusive, interconnected and built on partnerships, while maintaining the importance of strong and credible multilateral institutions to balance interests and promote cooperation.
The UN chief added that for multipolarity to deliver peace and prosperity, it must be supported by institutions whose legitimacy is based on shared responsibility and common values among nations.
Reflecting on the principles of the UN Charter, Guterres said while global structures may require reform, the core values behind the organisation remain relevant and vital to achieving lasting peace and justice.
Outlining his priorities for his final year in office, he linked peace, development and reform, stressing the need for sustainable peace rooted in international law and capable of addressing the root causes of conflict.
He also highlighted ongoing efforts to reform the UN Security Council, accelerate progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals and strengthen the global financial system.
On climate change and technology, Guterres underscored the need for fair support for countries facing climate-related disasters and called for international frameworks to govern artificial intelligence.
He concluded by urging the global community to choose actions that promote peace, justice, responsibility and progress in what he described as deeply troubled times.
