The Ondo State Police Command says it rescued two suspects allegedly linked to the murder of a farmer from a mob attempting to lynch them in Ala community, Akure North Local Government Area.
The suspects were reportedly rescued after residents allegedly took matters into their own hands over the farmer’s killing. However, details surrounding the alleged murder, including the victim’s identity, the date of the incident and the circumstances leading to the suspects’ arrest, have not been independently confirmed.
It was also unclear whether the suspects had been formally charged or transferred to a police facility for further investigation.
The incident highlights the dangers of mob justice, particularly when anger over violent crime prompts residents to attack people suspected of involvement. While communities have a legitimate interest in demanding justice and security, suspects are entitled to due process, and allegations must be established through lawful investigation and judicial proceedings.
The police are expected to investigate the farmer’s killing, establish the suspects’ alleged roles and ensure that anyone found responsible is brought before a competent court.
Residents are urged to provide credible information to security agencies and avoid taking the law into their own hands.
