The Ondo State Police Command has announced the arrest of a suspected kidnapping kingpin, Abdullahi Lawal, who had been on the run following a major police operation in Ikare-Akoko, Ondo State.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Command said the suspect, identified as Abdullahi Lawal, was apprehended after months of intelligence-driven surveillance and coordinated security operations.
Police authorities said Lawal was the alleged mastermind behind the kidnapping of Aremu Tijani, who was abducted on August 18, 2025, at his bush farm in the Ikare-Akoko axis.
According to the Command’s spokesperson, Abayomi Jimoh, the suspect had earlier escaped during a police tactical operation shortly after the kidnapping incident.
During that operation, security operatives reportedly neutralised three members of the gang while four other suspects were arrested.
However, Lawal managed to flee the scene despite sustaining gunshot injuries during the exchange with police operatives.
The police said the suspect was immediately placed on an intelligence watchlist, while surveillance and investigations were intensified to track his movements and possible hideouts.
“After months of sustained intelligence-led operations, the suspect was eventually apprehended in Ikare-Akoko,” the statement said, adding that he has made useful confessional statements and will be charged to court.
The Command reiterated its zero tolerance for kidnapping and other violent crimes across the state, assuring residents that efforts are ongoing to dismantle criminal networks operating within Ondo State and neighbouring communities.
The Commissioner of Police, Adebowale Lawal, also commended the dedication and professionalism of officers involved in the operation and appreciated members of the public for providing information that aided the investigation.
Residents were urged to remain vigilant and continue to report suspicious activities to security agencies through established channels.
Police authorities assured that proactive measures remain in place to safeguard lives and property, stressing that criminal elements will not be allowed to operate freely within the state.
