A tragic incident involving a commercial motorcyclist has triggered violent unrest in Ibadan, Oyo State, after angry youths set fire to a police outpost following the death of a rider during a stop-and-search encounter with police officers.
April 30, 2026 — The victim, identified as Sanni Salisu, reportedly collapsed and died after an interaction with officers attached to the Kara Police Outpost in the Moniya area of Ibadan. Police authorities say the officers were conducting an unauthorised stop-and-search operation when the rider suddenly developed what appeared to be a medical emergency and was rushed to a hospital, where he was confirmed dead.
However, news of his death quickly spread across the community, sparking anger among residents who accused the police of misconduct and mishandling the situation.
The situation escalated into violence, with youths attacking and burning parts of the police facility and destroying property before security reinforcements restored order.
The Oyo State Police Command has since confirmed the arrest of the officers involved and ordered a full investigation, while also calling for calm and warning against misinformation circulating on social media.
Analysts say the incident reflects the fragile trust between security agencies and some communities, particularly in high-tension encounters involving commercial motorcyclists, where disputes over stop-and-search operations have repeatedly triggered unrest.
The development adds to ongoing national concerns over police accountability, crowd reactions to perceived injustice, and the urgent need for improved engagement between law enforcement and the public.
