The office of Anambra State First Lady, Dr Nonye Soludo, has clarified the nature of the godparent relationship between the families of Governor Chukwuma Soludo and former governor Peter Obi.
The clarification was issued by the First Lady’s media aide, Daniel Ezeigwe, following enquiries generated by a viral video in which Obi said he and his wife were godparents to Soludo’s children.
Ezeigwe said the claim, as presented, was not correct, stressing that Obi was not a godfather to any of the governor’s children.
“Mr Peter Obi is not a godfather to any of the children of Professor Chukwuma and Dr Nonye Soludo,” he said in the statement.
The aide then outlined the actual relationship between the two families.
He said Nonye Soludo, the Anambra First Lady, serves as the confirmation godmother to Obi’s daughter, while Margaret Obi, Obi’s wife, is the baptismal godmother to one of Soludo’s daughters.
“Neither Mr Obi nor Professor Soludo has served as a godparent to the other’s children,” Ezeigwe said.
He explained that the First Lady’s office decided to issue the clarification after receiving several calls and enquiries following the circulation of Obi’s remarks.
The aide acknowledged that Obi might simply have misspoken while speaking at the Nigerian Guild of Editors’ conference in Enugu, but said the wide circulation of the video made it important to establish the facts.
He further described the relationship between the two families as cordial and urged the public and media to disregard any impression that Obi is the godfather of any of Soludo’s children.
Obi had told editors on Friday that he and his wife were godparents to Soludo’s children while insisting that political differences between him and the governor had not translated into a personal quarrel.
The First Lady’s office said the clarification was intended specifically to distinguish the actual godparent relationships between the two families from the impression created by the viral video.
