Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has delivered one of his most direct and critical assessments of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, describing the current federal government as ineffective, incompetent, and failing ordinary Nigerians. In a widely circulated video message, Obasanjo said the leadership has made every citizen a victim of poor governance and lamented the lack of tangible progress across key sectors.
This development was reported on April 9, 2026, with Obasanjo stating that while every government inherits challenges, the Tinubu administration has relied on those challenges as excuses rather than solutions.
He stressed that competent, effective governance would have delivered better results for businesses, livelihoods, and public confidence. “When you have an ineffective and incompetent government, we are all victims. Those of your business would be better today if they had a competent and effective and performing government,” he said.
Drawing on lessons from his military training, Obasanjo warned against reinforcing failure, insisting that leadership must be accountable and results‑oriented.
His remarks intensify ongoing national debates over Nigeria’s economic difficulties, security challenges, and political leadership as the country approaches the 2027 general elections.
As of this report, there has been no official response from the presidency to Obasanjo’s critique.
