The Oba of Benin, His Royal Majesty Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku’Akpolokpolo Ewuare II, has expressed support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s bid for a second term in the 2027 presidential election, urging Nigerians to allow the President to continue with what he described as his “good work.”
The monarch spoke on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, when the Director-General of the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council, Abdulaziz Yari, led a delegation to the Benin Palace to seek royal blessings, prayers and support for Tinubu’s re-election. The delegation included Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume, former Sokoto State Governor Aliyu Wamakko and former APC National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje.
Yari conveyed Tinubu’s greetings to the monarch and highlighted what he described as achievements of the administration, including improvements in food prices, exchange-rate stability and the construction of inter-regional roads.
Responding, Oba Ewuare II said he believed Tinubu was performing well and therefore deserved a renewed mandate.
“If one is doing well, why not join hands with the president to do what he is doing well?” the monarch said, before adding: “Let President Tinubu finish the good work.”
The Oba also used the biblical reference, “Let he who is without sin cast the first stone,” while urging Nigerians to consider continuity where they believe a government is performing well.
However, the monarch stressed that the Benin throne is not partisan, saying his position should not be interpreted as membership of one political party or another. He also argued that there was no need for change merely for the sake of change.
The development comes as political parties and presidential aspirants begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 general election, with endorsements and consultations increasingly featuring in the emerging campaign landscape.
