Abass Olalekan, a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member serving in Abeokuta South Local Government Area of Ogun State, has been taken into police custody following the death of a fellow corps member, Victoria Ariyo.
According to circulating reports on Thursday, 19 March 2026. Victoria Ariyo died on Tuesday, 17 March 2026, from complications allegedly linked to a terminated pregnancy. She was later buried at Kobape Cemetery along the Kobape–Sagamu Road in Abeokuta.
Further reports say the police detained Olalekan as part of an ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death.
The case has drawn sharper attention because it comes barely a month after another female corps member, Adeleye Mary, reportedly died under unclear circumstances in the same local government area, though reports say authorities do not presently treat the two deaths as connected.
Beyond one tragic death, it raises troubling questions about duty of care, welfare oversight, and the vulnerability of corps members posted far from home. If the allegations are confirmed, the incident could trigger wider calls for accountability within the NYSC system.
