The killing of nine farmers in Gidan Danjumma community of Birnin Magaji Local Government Area of Zamfara State is another painful reminder that insecurity continues to threaten Nigeria’s food security and rural economy. According to accounts from residents and community sources cited by media reports, the victims were attacked by suspected bandits while working on their farms despite earlier threats against farming activities in the area.
Beyond the tragic loss of lives, the attack exposes a dangerous trend in which armed groups seek to control agricultural activities, intimidate rural populations, and impose illegal levies on farmers.
Such actions not only terrorize communities but also discourage food production at a time when millions of Nigerians are already struggling with rising food prices and economic hardship.
The incident underscores the urgent need for stronger security presence in farming communities, improved intelligence gathering, and sustained military operations against criminal networks operating across Zamfara and the wider North-West region.
Until farmers can safely return to their fields without fear of attack, Nigeria’s battle against insecurity and hunger will remain far from over.
