The Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency, Charles Anosike, has been honoured with the 2026 Nigerian Educational Excellence Award in recognition of his contributions to education through meteorology-based studies and professional training programmes.
The award ceremony was held on Monday at the Faculty of Education, Federal University Oye-Ekiti, Ekiti State.
Anosike, who was represented at the event by the Director of Weather Forecasting Services, Vincent Weli, expressed appreciation to the organisers for the recognition, describing the award as a reflection of NiMet’s commitment to advancing knowledge and innovation in Nigeria.
According to him, NiMet has continued to support educational institutions through curriculum development, meteorological training, and access to climate data for research and learning purposes.
He noted that the agency has organised annual climate workshops and partnered with universities to integrate meteorological studies into academic programmes, helping to equip students and researchers with practical knowledge for sustainable development.
Anosike, who also serves as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the World Meteorological Organization, said the recognition would further encourage the agency to invest in the training of future meteorologists, researchers, and climate experts.
Speaking at the event, Prof. Weli stated that under Anosike’s leadership, NiMet had expanded collaborations with tertiary institutions by integrating operational weather data into courses related to meteorology, geography, environmental science, and agriculture.
He added that the agency had prioritised the training of young meteorologists and technicians on modern forecasting systems, data analysis, and climate warning mechanisms to strengthen Nigeria’s response to changing climate conditions.
Weli also said NiMet’s emphasis on open data access and public communication had transformed the agency’s Seasonal Climate Prediction and daily Weather Outlook into useful learning tools for lecturers, researchers, and students studying climate dynamics in Nigeria.
According to him, the award recognises Anosike’s commitment to using education as a tool for strengthening scientific knowledge and national resilience.
