The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC) have agreed to deepen collaboration on climate services, data management, and national climate resilience initiatives to enhance Nigeria’s response to climate change.
The agreement was reached during a courtesy visit by NiMet Director-General and Chief Executive Officer, Prof. Charles Anosike, to the NCCC Secretariat, where he met with the Council’s Director-General, Dr. Tenioye Majekodunmi.
During the meeting, Anosike underscored NiMet’s role as the custodian of Nigeria’s long-term meteorological records, noting that the agency provides critical atmospheric data used for climate trend analysis, climate risk assessment, and climate projections.
He called for stronger collaboration between both institutions in developing climate projections, improving early warning systems, standardizing climate data, and conducting joint research to support evidence-based policies and climate-informed decision-making.
According to him, the partnership would provide policymakers with localized scientific information to strengthen climate adaptation and mitigation efforts while improving the translation of global climate projections into practical advisories for vulnerable communities and climate-sensitive sectors.
Anosike also highlighted the importance of reliable meteorological data in securing international climate finance, suggesting that both organisations jointly pursue funding opportunities for climate resilience, early warning systems, and climate infrastructure projects.
In his response, Majekodunmi commended NiMet’s contributions to weather and climate services in Nigeria and expressed support for a stronger institutional partnership.
Both agencies agreed to formalize their collaboration through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) covering climate services, climate data management, research, early warning systems, capacity building, and other areas of mutual interest.
The meeting reaffirmed the commitment of NiMet and the NCCC to advancing Nigeria’s climate agenda through stronger institutional cooperation and science-driven solutions aimed at protecting lives, livelihoods, and the environment.
