The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and the China Meteorological Administration (CMA) have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation through the deployment of artificial intelligence and advanced early warning technologies to improve weather and climate services.
The renewed partnership was announced during a bilateral meeting held on the sidelines of the 80th Session of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Executive Council. The meeting was attended by NiMet Director-General and Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the WMO, Prof. Charles Anosike, and his Chinese counterpart, Dr. Chen Zhenlin, Administrator and Director-General of the China Meteorological Administration.
Both officials agreed to expand collaboration by adopting and customizing the MAZU AI Early Warning Platform for Nigeria, while also exploring the use of emerging AI technologies to enhance weather forecasting, climate monitoring, and disaster preparedness.
As part of the agreement, both countries will work towards signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) covering the implementation of the MAZU platform, staff exchange programmes, joint research initiatives, data sharing, remote sensing, aviation meteorology research, knowledge exchange, and scholarship opportunities.
The partnership is expected to strengthen the capacity of both meteorological agencies and deliver socioeconomic benefits through improved climate resilience, technological innovation, and more effective early warning systems.
