The Federal Government has confirmed the death of Ambassador-designate to Algeria, Mohammed Mahmud Lele, who passed away in Ankara, Ankara, after a prolonged illness.
In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, the diplomat was said to have died in the early hours of April 19, 2026.
Until his death, Lele served as Director in charge of the Middle East and Gulf Division at the ministry.
Lele had recently been confirmed by the Senate as Nigeria’s Ambassador-designate to Algeria.
Born in 1976 in Gamawa Local Government Area of Bauchi State, he studied Economics at Bayero University Kano and joined the Nigerian Foreign Service in 2001.
During his diplomatic career, he served in Nigerian missions in Berlin, Germany; Lomé, Togo; and Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, earning recognition for his professionalism, strategic insight, and dedication to advancing Nigeria’s foreign policy objectives.
The ministry described his death as a significant loss to the Foreign Service and the nation, noting that he was widely regarded as a diligent and exemplary officer.
The Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Dunoma Umar Ahmed, received his remains at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, paying tribute to his commitment and service.
According to the ministry, the late diplomat was laid to rest on April 22, 2026, in Kano State in accordance with Islamic rites.
The government extended condolences to his family, associates, and the people of Bauchi State, praying for the peaceful repose of his soul and strength for those he left behind.
