Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has resigned from his position, signalling a decisive shift from public office to political ambition as preparations for the 2027 elections gather pace.
In a letter dated April 22 and addressed to President Bola Tinubu, Adelabu confirmed that his resignation will take effect from April 30. He explained that the decision was necessary to enable him to focus fully on his governorship ambition in Oyo State.
Citing the provisions of the amended Electoral Act 2026, which prohibit political office holders from contesting elections while still in office, Adelabu said stepping down was both a legal obligation and a personal commitment to due process.
Reflecting on his time in office, the outgoing minister expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve in what he described as one of Nigeria’s most critical and challenging sectors. He thanked President Tinubu for the confidence placed in him, noting that his appointment offered him a platform to contribute to ongoing reforms in the power sector.
His resignation also comes against the backdrop of an earlier directive by President Tinubu, mandating all political appointees with aspirations for elective office in 2027 to resign on or before March 31. The directive affected ministers, ministers of state, special advisers, senior aides, and heads of federal agencies intending to participate in party primaries or contest elections.
For Adelabu, the move marks the beginning of a new political chapter—one that shifts his focus from tackling Nigeria’s electricity challenges to seeking the mandate of the people in Oyo State.
