The Publisher of Starnews NG, Mr Olumide Akinrinlola, has criticised the Federal Government’s decision to spend $9 million, estimated at about ₦13.455 billion, on an image management contract with a United States firm, describing it as a misplaced priority.
Akinrinlola, while reacting to the development, said committing such a huge sum to public relations aimed at improving Nigeria’s image abroad was ill-conceived, especially when the government has yet to effectively address pressing challenges confronting the country.
His reaction comes amid growing scrutiny of the Federal Government’s decision to spend heavily on image management at a time when insecurity, poverty and terrorism remain major challenges facing the nation.
He noted that millions of Nigerians are grappling with hunger and widespread insecurity, stressing that the focus of government should be on concrete actions capable of improving the lives of citizens rather than on polishing the nation’s image in foreign lands.
The Starnews NG publisher also criticised successive administrations, from the government of former President Muhammadu Buhari to that of President Bola Tinubu, accusing them of failing to demonstrate the political will required to decisively tackle terrorism and restore security across the country.
He argued that firm action could have prevented Nigeria from being designated by the United States as a country of particular concern.
According to Akinrinlola, genuine image management begins at home, insisting that the government must prioritise the welfare and security of Nigerians over international perception.
