Professor Abubakar Mohammed El-Jummah, the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology at the Nigerian Army University in Biu, Borno State, has died while being held captive by Boko Haram.
He was kidnapped on March 3, 2025, while traveling from Biu to Maiduguri along the Damaturu-Buni Yadi-Biu road. A family member reported that the insurgents later communicated that Professor El-Jummah had fallen ill and died after nearly a year in captivity.
A funeral prayer was conducted in his absence at his family home around 2:00 p.m. on Thursday. Another service was held at the Ngomari Old Airport Juma’at Mosque, close to his home, where hundreds of academics and community members gathered to pay their respects.
The family expressed their gratitude to everyone who supported them during this difficult time. It remains unclear if Boko Haram requested a ransom before his death.
