Siminalayi Fubara, governor of Rivers State, has dissolved the state executive council.
The decision was announced in a statement issued on Thursday night by Onwuka Nzeshi, the governor’s chief press secretary. In the statement, Fubara directed all commissioners and special advisers to hand over their responsibilities to the permanent secretaries or the most senior officials in their respective ministries.
The governor expressed appreciation to the outgoing members of the executive council for their contributions to the development of the state and wished them success in their future pursuits.
The dissolution of the cabinet comes only days after President Bola Tinubu facilitated a truce between Fubara and the Rivers State House of Assembly, following months of political friction, threats of impeachment, and deep divisions within the legislature.
A majority of the members of the Rivers assembly are known to be loyal to Nyesom Wike, the minister of the Federal Capital Territory.
Wike had recently campaigned against Fubara’s re-election ambition, accusing the governor of failing to honour a peace agreement both parties signed prior to the lifting of emergency rule in the state by the president.
Earlier this week, Wike disclosed that Tinubu had again stepped into the Rivers political crisis, expressing optimism that the prolonged face-off between the executive and legislative arms would be permanently resolved.
In January, TheCable reported that part of the peace conditions proposed by Wike before the suspension of emergency rule included a demand that Fubara reinstate Sergeant Awuse, the traditional ruler of Emohua kingdom, as chairman of the state’s traditional rulers’ council.
Fubara had removed Awuse, regarded as a close ally of Wike, in June 2024 and replaced him with Chike Worlu Wodo.
Wike had also called for the appointment of new commissioners as part of the reconciliation terms.
