Nigeria has been placed on high alert over the risk of Ebola importation, as the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) strengthens surveillance following the ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The NCDC said travellers arriving from countries with active or relevant Ebola transmission may be required to complete a Health Declaration Form, allowing health authorities to strengthen monitoring and follow-up.
The agency stressed that the heightened measures are precautionary and do not mean Nigeria currently has an Ebola outbreak.
The alert follows an assessment of the evolving international situation and consultations involving public health authorities. Nigeria’s preparedness measures will continue to be reviewed as developments emerge.
The NCDC has urged travellers and members of the public to remain vigilant and provide accurate travel and health information when required. People who develop symptoms consistent with Ebola, particularly following possible exposure or travel to affected areas, are advised to seek medical attention promptly.
The renewed warning places Nigeria’s airports and other points of entry under increased public-health scrutiny, with surveillance designed to detect and contain any imported case as early as possible.
