Jose Mourinho suffered his first defeat since returning to Real Madrid as Real Betis secured a dramatic 1-0 victory over the Spanish giants in LaLiga on Friday.
Madrid entered the encounter with a perfect record after winning their opening three league matches, but struggled to break down a determined Betis side.
Despite dominating possession for long spells, Mourinho’s men failed to find the breakthrough as Betis remained compact and disciplined defensively.
The hosts eventually stunned the visitors in the 81st minute when Troy Parrott fired Betis into the lead.
Real Madrid were handed a late opportunity to rescue a point after Vinicius Junior was fouled in the box, resulting in a penalty.
However, Kylian Mbappe failed to convert from the spot, with Betis goalkeeper Álvaro Valles producing a crucial save to preserve his side’s lead.
The defeat marks Mourinho’s first since taking charge of Madrid again and extends the club’s difficult run at the venue.
Real Madrid have now failed to record a victory at Real Betis since 2021.
