Reality television star and singer Hazel Onou has lamented what he described as the growing culture of financial expectations in Nigeria’s dating scene, complaining that many women appear to be more interested in money than genuine relationships.
The winner of the sixth edition of Big Brother Naija made the remarks in a video shared on his Instagram page on Sunday, where he humorously appealed to fans for a “referral code” to help him find what he described as a good woman.
The 34-year-old entertainer said he has become increasingly frustrated with modern dating, claiming that even the simplest interactions now come with financial demands.
“I can’t even lie, I’m getting old. Dating culture in Nigeria is becoming something else. Abeg, where them dey see better woman now? Una get referral code? Any small thing, billing. Small hello, billing. How are you? Billing,” he said.
His comments quickly sparked debate on social media, with users expressing mixed reactions. While some agreed that financial expectations have become a major issue in relationships, others argued that it was unfair to generalise Nigerian women, insisting that many genuine women are still seeking sincere relationships rather than financial gain.
Some commenters also suggested that Whitemoney’s experience could be influenced by the social circles he moves in, particularly within the entertainment industry.
Whitemoney, who turned 34 on June 6, rose to fame after winning Big Brother Naija Season Six in 2021 and has since established himself as a singer, entrepreneur and television personality.
