Mohbad: IGP Approves Family’s Petition For Fresh Investigation

By Opeyemi Adelakun

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has approved a petition by the family of late singer Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, seeking a fresh and comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.

The family disclosed this through its lawyer, Oladayo Ogungbe, in a statement dated September 29, 2026.

According to Ogungbe, the family submitted the petition to the IGP on April 14, 2026, while it was received at the Force Headquarters, Abuja, on May 7.

The petition raised concerns over alleged inconsistencies in the earlier investigative process and called for a comprehensive forensic reconstruction of the circumstances surrounding the singer’s death.

The lawyer said the IGP subsequently approved the petition and forwarded it to the Lagos State Police Command for immediate action.

The family was later informed that the matter had been assigned to officers of the Special Enquiry Bureau for further investigation.

“The family’s representative has since been invited and has engaged with the new team of investigators assigned to the matter.

“The family has continued to follow up with the investigators and remained engaged with the new investigative process,” Ogungbe said.

The clarification came after the Federal High Court in Abuja dismissed a separate suit seeking to compel the police to reopen investigations into Mohbad’s death. The court dismissed the suit on September 25, 2026.

Ogungbe stressed that the court case was separate from the family’s petition to the IGP and was neither instituted by the Aloba family nor with its authority.

“The Aloba Family therefore does not wish the public to conflate the dismissal of that suit with the separate investigative process already commenced pursuant to the Family’s petition to the Inspector-General of Police,” the statement said.

The family maintained that the court’s decision did not terminate the police investigation initiated through its petition.

It also said it would continue to cooperate with investigators by providing relevant documents, witnesses and other materials that could assist the probe.

The lawyers said the family was seeking a credible, comprehensive and transparent investigation rather than attempting to prejudge its outcome.

“The re-investigation is ongoing. The Aloba Family remains fully engaged. The pursuit of justice for Mohbad continues,” the statement concluded.
