A suspected motorcycle thief, identified as Ahmad Dankoli, was beaten to death by an angry mob and his corpse set ablaze in Balare town, Ajingi Local Government Area of Kano State.
The incident occurred on Sunday night during the community’s weekly market after the deceased was allegedly caught attempting to steal a motorcycle belonging to a trader.
The councillor representing Balare Ward, Malam Shu’aibu Abdulmumin Yalo, disclosed that a witness reportedly raised the alarm after spotting the suspect with the motorcycle, attracting a crowd that descended on him.
According to Yalo, the mob beat the suspect unconscious until he died before security operatives arrived at the scene.
He said security personnel initially succeeded in recovering the body in an effort to restore calm, but were overwhelmed by irate youths who retrieved the corpse and set it ablaze.
“The security personnel initially recovered the body, but some angry youths overpowered them, took it back and set it ablaze,” the councillor said.
Yalo attributed the mob action to growing frustration over persistent motorcycle theft in the community, revealing that more than 32 motorcycles had reportedly been stolen from the weekly market in recent months.
He added that the incident caused panic among traders, forcing the market to shut down abruptly on Sunday night before commercial activities resumed the following day.
When contacted, the spokesperson for the Kano State Police Command, CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, said the incident had yet to be officially reported to the command.
He, however, assured that the police would verify the incident and commence an investigation.
