By George Omagbemi Nigerians have continued reacting to the appointment of education administrator, Professor Segun Aina, as the new Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), following the announcement that he will succeed outgoing Registrar, Professor Is-haq Oloyede, whose tenure is expected to end in July 2026.
The appointment, reportedly approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has generated mixed reactions across the education sector, with many stakeholders praising Aina’s academic background and administrative experience, while others expressed concern over the transition and the future direction of the examination body after Oloyede’s widely acknowledged reforms.
Supporters of the appointment described Professor Aina as a seasoned education expert capable of sustaining ongoing reforms, transparency measures, and technological innovations introduced within JAMB in recent years.
They argued that continuity and institutional stability remain important for preserving public confidence in Nigeria’s tertiary admission system.
However, some critics and education stakeholders questioned the timing and selection process, insisting that the incoming registrar would face enormous expectations following Oloyede’s tenure, which was widely credited for improving revenue generation, reducing examination malpractice, and strengthening accountability within the board.
Analysts believe the transition marks another significant moment for Nigeria’s education sector, as attention now shifts toward whether the incoming leadership can consolidate reforms and address persistent challenges surrounding university admissions, examination credibility, and access to higher education nationwide.
