Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has assured Nigerians of a peaceful, secure, free, and credible governorship election in Ekiti State ahead of the forthcoming poll, while reaffirming the readiness of the Nigeria Police Force to maintain law and order throughout the electoral process.
The assurance was given during the Election Stakeholders’ Meeting and signing of the Peace Accord held in Ado-Ekiti, where political parties, candidates, security agencies, traditional rulers, civil society organisations, religious leaders, election observers, and representatives of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) gathered to commit themselves to peaceful conduct before, during, and after the election.
IGP Disu stated that the Nigeria Police Force, in collaboration with other security agencies under the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security, had put necessary measures in place to guarantee the safety of voters, electoral officials, and election materials across the state.
He also stressed that security agencies would remain professional, neutral, and fully committed to protecting Nigeria’s democratic process.
During the event, INEC officials and members of the National Peace Committee urged political parties and their supporters to avoid violence, hate speech, vote-buying, and other forms of electoral misconduct capable of undermining the credibility of the election.
Stakeholders further called on candidates to ensure that the peace accord translates into responsible conduct throughout the campaign period and election day.
Political analysts believe the peace accord and heightened security preparations reflect growing efforts by electoral authorities and security agencies to sustain public confidence and prevent election-related violence ahead of the Ekiti governorship poll scheduled for June 2026.
