Senior Pastor Sarah Omakwu of the Family Worship Centre (FWC) has advised married men to make their wives, rather than their parents or siblings, their next of kin, arguing that a spouse should be recognised as a person’s primary family member in matters relating to official records, benefits, and family responsibilities.
In a message that has generated widespread reactions on social media, Omakwu urged married men not to name their brothers or fathers as their next of kin, arguing that siblings are naturally more inclined to prioritise the interests of their own families over those of a deceased brother’s wife and children.
According to her, a man’s immediate family is his wife and children, and they should take precedence in matters relating to benefits, inheritance, and official documentation.
She also advised married women to designate their husbands as their next of kin instead of sisters, parents, or other relatives.
The cleric further cautioned against listing more than one person as a next of kin on official forms, maintaining that only one individual—preferably a spouse—should be named. She said this aligns with God’s design for marriage and family.
Her remarks have sparked mixed reactions online, with many supporting her position that spouses should be given priority, while others argued that the choice of a next of kin should remain a personal decision influenced by individual family circumstances and legal considerations.
