Real Madrid striker Kylian Mbappé says winning the 2026 Ballon d’Or would give him an opportunity to honour his African heritage and the continent that has continued to show him strong support.
The France captain made the remarks during an interview with RFI on Tuesday while reflecting on his family roots and his relationship with Africa.
Mbappé, who was born and raised in France, has African heritage through his Cameroonian father and Algerian mother. He said his success in football had not weakened his connection with his origins.
“I have never cut ties with my roots, my origins,” the forward said.
The 27-year-old also acknowledged the affection he has received during visits to Africa and expressed appreciation to African journalists who have supported his bid for the prestigious individual football award.
Mbappé said he would be delighted to dedicate the honour to the continent should he emerge as the winner.
“I’ve always felt very loved on the African continent. I hope I can leave with the Ballon d’Or and, in one way or another, dedicate it to them too,” he said.
The Real Madrid forward is seeking his first Ballon d’Or and is among the leading contenders for the 2026 edition.
His case has been strengthened by his performances during the previous season, when he finished as the leading scorer in both La Liga and the UEFA Champions League.
He also emerged as the top scorer at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Ballon d’Or ceremony is scheduled for October 26 in London, where the year’s outstanding performers in world football will be recognised.
For Mbappé, the award would potentially represent not only a personal milestone but also a symbolic tribute to the African heritage that remains an important part of his identity.
