Maureen Badejo, the UK-based Nigerian blogger, has successfully met her bail conditions and is now out of police custody, having returned to her residence in Lagos. The news of her release was shared by activist Omoyele Sowore on his Facebook page today.
Sowore expressed his sentiments regarding the circumstances surrounding Badejo’s detention, stating, “Despite the challenges faced, Maureen Badejo is now out, and we must celebrate this victory as a triumph of resilience and courage. This moment is a reminder of what becomes possible when people of conscience refuse to be complacent.”
He emphasized the importance of unity and standing firm for the public good, asserting that no force, regardless of its power, can escape accountability when individuals come together to advocate for justice.
Sowore concluded his message with a call to action, stating, “The fight continues, and we will keep fighting for freedom for all. Welcome Maureen Badejo.”
Badejo secured her bail at a Magistrate Court in Lagos, after refusing to settle out of court. She was detained following her voluntary return to Nigeria on Friday, where she responded to an alleged summons by Interpol regarding an unresolved issue with Apostle Johnson Suleman, the Senior Pastor of Omega Fire Ministries. Upon her arrival, she was reportedly transferred to the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) and then to the Alagbon detention facility, following an alleged petition initiated by Pastor Daniel Olukoya of the Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries.
During her time in detention, Badejo faced significant challenges, including demands from the police for her to provide sureties for her release and an undertaking to cease her criticisms of Dr Olukoya. Prominent Nigerians, including activist Omoyele Sowore, had been vocal in their calls for her unconditional release, claiming that freedom of expression allows for criticism of individuals, regardless of their standing.
Despite the public outcry and widespread calls for her release across social media, the police remained reticent, failing to issue an official statement regarding her detention or the circumstances surrounding it.
