Several residents have reportedly been killed while many others remain unaccounted for after suspected herdsmen attacked Ojantele community along the Abuja–Otukpo Road in Benue State.
The attackers were said to have stormed the community on Friday, opening fire on villagers and forcing many residents to flee for safety.
Eyewitnesses disclosed that the gunmen invaded the area in large numbers and began shooting sporadically, creating panic as residents ran into nearby bushes to escape the violence.
Preliminary reports suggested that more than 20 people may have been killed in the attack, although the exact number of casualties has yet to be officially confirmed.
Confirming the incident, the chairman of Apa Local Government Area, Adams Ogwola, said authorities were still assessing the situation and could not immediately verify the number of those killed or missing.
Ogwola added that security personnel had been mobilised to the affected community as efforts continue to restore calm and prevent further attacks.
