Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, will temporarily transfer executive responsibilities to his deputy, Bayo Lawal, after the State House of Assembly approved his request to embark on annual leave.
The approval was granted during Thursday’s plenary after lawmakers considered a formal communication from the governor, submitted in line with constitutional provisions requiring a sitting governor to notify the legislature before proceeding on official leave.
According to the letter, Makinde’s leave will commence on August 10 and end on September 11, with the governor expected to resume official duties on September 14, 2026.
The letter was read by Deputy Speaker Muhammed Fadeyi, who presided over the sitting. Members unanimously endorsed the request, expressing confidence in the continuity of governance under the deputy governor.
Following the approval, Lawal will serve as acting governor, overseeing the administration of the state until Makinde returns from leave.
Fadeyi congratulated the governor on the approval and wished him a peaceful break, while expressing confidence in Lawal’s ability to provide effective leadership during the period.
He also reaffirmed the Assembly’s commitment to sustaining a productive relationship with the executive arm, noting that governance and ongoing government programmes would continue without disruption.
Several lawmakers praised Makinde for adhering to constitutional procedures, describing the formal notification to the legislature as a demonstration of respect for democratic governance and the rule of law.
The House subsequently directed that its resolution approving the governor’s leave be transmitted to the executive for implementation.
